Giba course challenges duathletes

The 2010 National Duathlon Series presented by Momentum Health and I-Flex has been by far and away the most exciting since the inception of the Series in 2008.

Besides greater participation by duathletes across the board as well as bigger sponsors coming on board, the Series has also witnessed four different men and three different women winning varying events in the 2010 series so far:

Event 1: Roodeplaat Dam – Andrea Steyn and Erhard Wolfaard
Event 2: Zevenwacht Estate – Michelle Lombardi and Lieuwe Boonstra
Event 3: Northern Farm – Carla van Huysteen and Brand Du Plessis
Event 4: Pollock Beach – Carla van Huysteen and Johan Pretorius

The fifth round of the series took place in Kwazulu Natal on Sunday at the mountain bike haven, Giba Gorge. Perfect weather conditions and a technical off-road route provided the perfect stage, challenging all participants.

In the men’s elite race, there was a constant change in position between Brand du Plessis (Team TCS), Lieuwe Boonstra (Team Red Bull Momentum) and JP Ten Napel (Team Jeep). Eventual winner by a small margin was Lieuwe Boonstra over Brand du Plessis and JP Ten Napel.

The women’s race had an even a bigger shuffle of positions between Shawna Thunder, Laetitia Botha (Team Ghost) and Lisa Baumann (Team Mr Price), with eventual winner Shawna Thunder over Lisa and Laetitia.

The overall series winners in both the men’s and women’s categories will be decided at the final event in the series at Potchefstroom Dam on Sunday 19 September, with the Grand Prix winners taking home a purse of R10, 000.
