2012 Comrades Marathon Road Closures & Roadworks

Avoid Traffic Congestion at Comrades 2012

The Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) anticipates high traffic volumes in the early hours of the Comrades Race Day – Sunday, 3 June 2012 – as thousands of runners make their way to the start venue at the Pietermaritzburg City Hall.

To this end, CMA Race Director, Johan Van Staden has issued an impassioned plea for runners to be mindful of the increased number of motorists heading to the same destination, coupled with the usual road closures and extensive road works which will inevitably lead to traffic delays.

Van Staden says, ‘The widespread road works currently taking place on the N3 in the Pietermaritzburg area is a major concern. Hence, together with the local traffic authorities, the CMA will have clear signage put up to direct motorists efficiently to the Start.

Motorists making their way to Pietermaritzburg from Durban are advised to take the following off-ramps and follow the Comrades sign boards:

·         New England Road
·         Ohrtmann Road
·         Church Street

Please note that the main exit to Durban is via Sanctuary Road.

Those approaching Pietermaritzburg from Johannesburg may take these off-ramps:

·         Peter Brown Drive
·         Chatterton Road / Liberty-Midlands Mall

Van Staden has therefore requested that runners allocate an extra hour or two to make it to the Comrades start line on time.

He says, ‘Your cooperation is vital in this regard. It is our wish that all entrants get to run their Comrades race and we would like to avoid any circumstance in which they are left behind due to not being on time.’
