CSA suspends junior member for six months

Paddler suspended

Yesterday Canoeing South Africa (CSA) announced the following:

"It is with regret that the Board of CSA has to announce that one of its junior members has been suspended from canoeing for a period of six months of which three months are suspended for a period of two years for acting contrary to the interests of Canoeing SA."

Following an investigation it was found that the junior member in question had used a false date of birth to enter an event in an age group below his correct age group, thereby gaining an unfair advantage.

The Board appointed a disciplinary committee to hear the matter and to make recommendations to the Board.  The committee heard evidence in this matter and found that the junior member was guilty of acting contrary to the interests of Canoeing South Africa by using an illegally amended date of birth certificate. The committee recommended to the CSA Board that the member be suspended for six months, with three months being suspended for a period of two years on condition that the member does not commit any act which is contrary to the interests of Canoeing SA during this period.

The Board of CSA has accepted the recommendation of its disciplinary committee and has imposed the recommended sanction on the junior member. The member will be eligible for competition again on 3 February 2011.

CSA does not tolerate any behavior that allows a member to gain an unfair advantage."

This statement has already got people talking on the SAKayak forum but CSA quite rightly did not publish the offenders name as the paddler is a minor.
