When you toe-up for the 2012 Royal Raid on 12 May 2012, you’re about to tackle the oldest and most prestigious trail run in Mauritius.
An epic journey into the heart of the island lies ahead, passing through some of the island’s most unforgettable scenery.
The 80km event was created in 2006 by two Mauritians passionate about trail running: Albert d’Unienville (today he’s the Events Manager of Naiade Resorts) and Frederic Robert, owner of Ecotourism Park in the south of the island. They looked to expertise from Réunion Island (known for its famous Grand Raid event) for the first two editions, bringing the event to world-class stature. Royal Raid can be considered to be the catalyst that ignited trail running in the lush garden of Mauritius. It’s little wonder that international and local runners and hikers continually mention the challenging course, the breathtaking scenery and the friendly atmosphere. One such runner is Owen Middleton, the Capetonian owner of Wildrunner Events. He’s done two Royal Raids and will be back in 2012. One of the reasons he likes Royal Raid so much is the variety of scenery and challenges in the 80km. “Anyone who thinks a run on Mauritius would be tropical island forest for the length of the route would be horribly wrong. The first 35km through Casela-Yemen Nature Reserve is like running in open African savannah, with flat-topped acacias dotting the landscape. The route is extremely well-marked and winds along the base of some pretty tall mountains - over 1,000m high in places - some with sharp granite spires at the top. Very impressive and inspiring terrain,” he says.
Participants in the RR80 experience these memorable landmarks: • Yemen Nature Reserve, the largest and one of the most beautiful nature reserves in Mauritius • The endemic fauna and flora - and the famous Parakeet Trail - of the Black River National Park (also included in the 35km) • The sugarcane fields of Domaine de Bel Ombre (in the 35km too)
In 2012 there are again three events which cater for the average family wanting to visit Mauritius in May, one of the best times to visit the popular holiday island: • Royal Raid 80 (RR80), the famous 80km ultra (cut-off 20 hours) • Royal Raid 35 (RR35), 35km with a 9 hour cut-off • Gecko Raid, 15km run or walk by anyone over 15-years old
Accommodation Tamassa Naïade (4 Stars) is the Royal Raid’s official hotel, conveniently situated just a few metres from the race finish. It’s a spacious hotel in a contemporary setting that strives to be different. All the rooms, housed in a set of villas, face the sea. They are arranged in three arcs, two around large swimming pools with a beach and the third on the seafront. It’s quite magical - a fabulous shoreline, lush greenery, rare tree specimens, flowering shrubs, plants and turquoise waters. Tamassa features 214 rooms, all with a sea-view in a happy fusion of the contemporary and the traditional.
Accommodation for participants and companions includes: • Transfers to race start • All social events • Race pack delivered at Tamassa at time of briefing • Transfers from airport to Tamassa and back (on request)
