Momentum Health i-flex National Duathlon Series
THE BEST-KEPT SECRET? Winter is the time most people pack on the pounds. Maybe they don’t know about some of the potent weapons you can use against weight gain.
Exercise is one of those superheroes. It will stand by your side and not let you down. Most peoples’ challenge with exercise is that it needs a focus. In winter it’s the hardest to focus on our fitness.
We need a red-hot friend to motivate us! Enter duathlon.
The du hints at the two sports it combines: running and cycling. To make it really interesting, duathlon actually consists of three legs held non-stop. The run comes first, then the cycle and a second run to finish.
Run+bike+run. In the Momentum Health i-flex National Duathlon Series, threre is another set of threes to remember: three events are held on the road and three are off-road.
BECOME A DUATHLETE. So, how do you get into the scene at this year’s Momentum Du Series? It’s easier than you think. The Series is headed to a venue near you in five provinces. Your first port of call is to visit www.duathlon.co.za
The Best Duathlon Advice
1. Train both disciplines a couple of time a month. Non-stop, alternating from one to the next 2-3 times. When you train on your bike, get home and go out for a run immediately.
2. REMEMBER TO FLIP IT. Don’t just run after your bike rides. Flip the order so that you ride when you come back from a run, even if you only ride for 20 minutes. This will train your legs and body to adapt to the different muscles used in running and riding. If you don’t do this, your legs will feel like jelly come race day!
3. NO NEED TO ACCESSORISE YET. Don’t hassle about expensive equipment until you start winning races - unless you really want the nickname “All the gear and no idea!”
You don’t need a road bike for the road events - an MTB is fine.
4. Friends. Training with a good mate or group of people you enjoy makes it so much more fun and you’ll get fitter faster if you’re a novice. It’s also safer, especially when cycling.
