Nando's Winter Ocean Racing Series

Hobie Beach will be alive with action again this month with the Nando's Winter Ocean Racing Series race on Sunday 25th July expected to draw hundreds of participants to the cities premier beach. The winter event is a once-off race day of the popular summer beach series which is unique to Nelson Mandela Bay and last summer attracted media cover valued in excess of R25 million for the Metro.

"In our bid to further establish Nelson Mandela Bay as Africa's water sport capital, we are keen to showcase that our mild winter climate is more than suitable for winter beach events" said Mike Zoetmulder from Zports, "For those families that aren't too chicken, the event on the 25th is going to be great fun for all."

The Nando's Winter Ocean Racing Series offers families the opportunity to get out and enjoy the winter sunshine together by taking part in any one of the four events on offer this winter; these being a 1km Ocean Swim, 5km Ocean Paddle, 5km Beach run/walk or the kids 12u 1km beach run/walk. As has become the tradition of the Nelson Mandela Bay Ocean Racing Series, the event will team up with the Reach for a Dream Foundation to realise some of the dreams of children who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Immediately after the events on Hobie Beach, participants will make their way to News Cafe the Boardwalk for the prize giving function and the presentation of the dreams.

"For the majority of us, we are blessed with good health and the ability to take part in sports events like the Nando's races and it's important that we acknowledge that others aren't as fortunate as ourselves and try and give back where ever we can. The Ocean Racing Series has been instrumental in realising at least 10% of the dreams of the Eastern Cape Reach for a Dream Foundation and it's something which we hope to continue through the Series." said Zoetmulder who last year was the Herald Citizen of the Year Business Category winner.

A fun morning is planned for the 25th, with all finishers of the Nando's Series receiving complimentary coffee, oranges, chocolates and medals as well as having their race number included in the lucky draw prize giving which will include a R1,500 cash prize. The first 75 participants to enter online (www.oceanracingseries.com) will receive a complimentary News Cafe winter sunshine breakfast during the prize giving. Entry fees are only R60 for the swim or paddle events, R40 for the 5km beach run/walk or R20 for the kids. An additional R20 late entry fee of R20 will apply to all participants who leave their entry until the race day.
