IN just six years, the annual Sabrina Love Ocean Challenge has become a multisport institution. It attracts some of South Africa’s top international sports stars and is a magnet for holidaymakers in the Plettenberg Bay area in late December.

But it is a lot more than a sporting event. Established by Tony and Suzy Lubner in 2003 in memory of their six-year-old daughter Sabrina, who died of a rare bone disorder, the event in Plettenberg Bay is a celebration of life and of caring for other people. Their Sabrina Love Foundation supports children and families living with physical disabilities in the Bitou region.

Sponsored by Stonehage international family wealth advisers and Discovery, the Challenge drew 1,700 participants to compete in swim, paddle, mountain bike, run and walk events. .
Event director Mark Collins of Magnetic South said overall figures had increased from 900 entrants last year. ”We believe this event will continue to grow, not only because of its great atmosphere and challenging events but also because it raises much-needed funds for a touching cause.”

Natalie du Toit was forced out of the water for four weeks before the race after a suspected spider bite. “I found a sore patch on my calf muscle at the beginning of December. A doctor who swims had a look at it and said I needed some antibiotics but within 24 hours it had spread throughout my leg. I spent three days on an antibiotic drip and this all took about four weeks to heal after having the affected area cut out. Being out the water for four weeks and then swimming a 6km swim went surprisingly well.” (She won the women’s title - again).
