Troisport Joburg City Triathlon Series

The show must go on! This was clearly the credo of race organisers and officials at the first Troisport Joburg City triathlon in mid-December. Two bizarre events involving a truck and a plane turned the race on its head...

The day started as most triathlon days do: a combination of calm registration, nervous bike preparation and pre-swim jitters. The swim started in typically frenetic fashion at Germiston Lake with the women thrashing off a few minutes ahead of the massive men’s field. Czech Olympian Lucie Zelenkova was true to her swimming prowess, coming out of the water well clear of Corinne Berg. In the men’s race, Jeff Norton, Terrence Parkin, Erhard Wolfaardt, Chris Felgate and 2009 Series winner Sander Berk were in the mix.

A change of plan
Charging into transition one (T1), the athletes were expecting to climb on their bikes and dash off onto the 40km bike course, like it’s always been done. But not today.
