Giro Prolight

The Prolight made its debut last summer with Tour de France winner Alberto Contador and several other world class riders. Using rider feedback from the world’s toughest bike race helped Giro put the final touches on their lightest race helmet yet. The Prolight weighs a mere 172 grams for a size medium CE‐certified version and 195 grams for a size medium CPSC‐ certified version.

Giro states that the Prolight will begin delivering to retailers in Europe by 1 February 2010 and domestic retailers by 1 March. “This was a ground‐up, no‐compromise project. Our primary objective was to build an ultralight helmet without compromising comfort or safety,” said Mike Lowe, Vice President of Research and Development at Giro. “By relying on our proven technologies like Wind Tunnel VentilationTM and SuperFitTM, we have not only met our weight savings goals, we exceeded them and developed a truly revolutionary helmet.”

The Prolight was developed from a blank slate, and the distinctive shape and styling reflect what was required to meet Giro’s aggressive weight and ventilation targets. “Each rib, channel and bridge was optimized to reduce every possible gram. It was really an exercise in restraint,” says Lowe. Another critical weight-saving feature is Giro’s new fit system, the Roc Loc SL. Built from light‐yet‐supple webbing material, the patented self‐adjusting system is stripped down to the bare essentials, but still offers a level of fit adjustment. Like all race-oriented Giro products, insight from the world’s best riders was critical during the multi‐year development process. The Prolight will be worn by leading UCI ProTour teams including Astana, Team RadioShack , Rabobank, Caisse d' Epargne and Garmin‐Transitions during the 2010 racing season.
