Equipment tips for Otter Trail Run

User Rating: / 0
PoorBest

So what do I need to bring?

Most important equipment items if you're running only and not going on to do the Southern Storm, presented by Hi-Tec*:

  • running shoes (always a good idea)
  • running pack
  • juice you've used in training
  • gaiters
  • compression socks
  • sleeping bag
  • pillow
  • earplugs to sleep through monkey and baboon nocturnal barking (ha!)
  • rain jacket/outer shell (compulsory)
  • cellphone case (optional, waterproof bag)
  • space blanket (compulsory)
  • whistle (compulsory)
  • coffee mug although there will be canteen mugs
  • slops
  • Petzl for dinner/terrorising the neighbourhood after sundown
  • towel and toiletries
  • warm clothes
  • mozzie spray
  • energy drink for Otter only (one sachet of a powdered form you've trained with, for the second half of the run, to keep energy levels acceptable)
  • cap
  • sunblock
  • eyewear
Tents are booked separately from camping and camping is not included in the entry fee. There are wash-lines at the Nature's Valley campsite to rinse smelly clothes afterwards.

Compiled by Deon Braun

*Thanks to Mickey Mallett, Ian Little and the rest of the Hi-Tec and Magneticsouth teams for making this exceptional race a reality since 2009.
