FEAT is coming this OctoberFriday, 01 July 2011 13:51 Big FEAT is comingby Lisa de Speville There has been much happening in the FEAT (Fascinating Expedition & Adventure Talks) stable over the past few weeks. Most important is the official announcement of the next evening of FEAT talks in October this year. Diarise the date now - Thursday, 6 October at The Alexander Theatre in Jo'burg. More importantly, tickets will be available through Computicket from Monday, 1 August 2011. As you'll recall, tickets sold out two weeks before the event last year, so you'd better be quick! You can find full details on the event, plus information on speakers, tickets, venue and parking on the Talks page on the FEAT website. Looking at other news... On Tuesday night, FEAT speaker (Jo'burg, Oct '10) set a new record for the Freedom Challenge, Race Across South Africa, when he completed the 2300km off-road route from 'Maritzburg to Wellington (just outside Cape Town) in 12 days, 15 hours and 30 minutes. Alex's time takes 24 hours off the record set in 2009 by Springbok cyclist Tim James. Did you know that two women started out on Africa-circumnavigation-by-bike expeditions on 27 April? Jolandie Rust left from Cape Town in a clockwise direction, while Charmaine Dudley departed from Durban heading in an anti-clockwise direction. Jolandie has been back in Jo'burg since early July, sorting out visas; she should be back in Windhoek this weekend. Charmaine is in Northern Mocambique and approaching Tanzania. Turbulent waves and unfavourable weather conditions have put Riaan Manser and Dan Skinstad more than a month behind on their paddle circumnavigation of Iceland. They've been out there for three months and just this week reached half-way. Their initial estimate was that they'd complete the trip in four months. Ricki Hodgson and Davey du Plessis arrive home in Durban on Saturday morning after four-months spent riding through Africa from Egypt. A welcome home event is planned for 09h00 in Ballito on Saturday morning. All welcome. I'm delighted to have officially cemented a relationship between FEAT and the FreeMe Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre in the North of Jo'burg. While I have personally had a number of interactions with this wonderful organisation over the years, I appreciate the parallel between our freedom to pursue outdoor passions and the freedom of wildlife to live in their natural habitat. FreeMe rescues, rehabilitiates and releases wildlife caged and trapped in the urban environment. R5 from the sale of FEAT tickets goes to FreeMe. Looking at something quite diffferent, in August Paul Erskine will ride in The Mongol Derby, a horseback endurance race in Mongolia. Only 20 riders will participate in this race, riding semi-wild horses, across 1,000 kilometres of Mongolia’s steppe. Riders have to self-navigate and they only stop to change horses every 40km. FEAT speaker (Jo'burg, Oct '10) is off to invitation-only Red Bull X-Alps event shortly. This 864km mountain trekking and paragliding event through the Alps starts on 17 July in Austria. When I saw Pierre recently at his fundraising event, he was looking lean and fast - the result of mega mileage training. Nice article from the team at Red Bull X-Alps on paraglider technology. Competitors at this event use super-light kit. After two years of planning, Luke Bush and Marian Penso are biking The Tour Divide, a self-supported 4418-kilometre mountain bike ‘race’ along the Continental Divide. They've been on the route for not quite three weeks now and have little over 1500km left to ride.
