What makes a champion? SSISA on the science of successTuesday, 28 June 2011 14:22 A presentation from SSISA on the science of successAre champions born or made, produced from hours of training over years of dedication, or are they the special few who possess unique attributes of greatness? In recent years, a number of best-selling books have popularized the theory that expert performance takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve. But is this true in sport? What role do genes play compared to training and how can we plan and manage our children's coaching and sports participation for best performance and long-term success? These are just a few of the questions that Dr Ross Tucker will address, as the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA), hosts an event that promises to entertain parents, coaches, teachers and sports enthusiasts alike. Dr Tucker (a consultant scientist at UCT and SSISA) is a thought-leader and is known for his outstanding ability to analyse situations/research and to present them in a highly accessible way to the general public – so this is not to be missed! Dr Tucker is also part of the management team of the Springbok Sevens team, and consults to South African canoeing, triathlon and the SA Olympic committee.
