Junior tour saved by ASG Sport
Shortly after the announcement by Cycling SA that the annual Giro del Capo would not continue, Le Coq Sportif announced their support of one of the smaller events on the national cycling calendar, that of the Tour de Boland, organised annually in Paarl, Drakenstein. Since then, the Tour de Boland organisers announced that CLOVER will be a co-sponsor of the Women’s division of this tour.
This week it was announced that the national tour for youth and junior cyclists, under the age of 19, was cancelled, due to "a lack of sponsorship”.
Nick Bester, well-known athlete and father of top South African rider Shaun-Nick Bester, pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat by announcing another sponsorhip to the Le Coq Sportif Tour de Boland, that of ASG Sport.
ASG Sport, the distributor of Rudy Project eyewear, Pinarello bicycles and Sci-Con accessories, offered to cover the costs of a separate competition for junior men within the Le Coq Sportif Tour de Boland, during the week of the Cycle Tour Week. This is possibly the only chance some of South Africa’s top junior cyclists will have in a multi-day tour before they’re off to Europe and the World Championships later this year.
ASG Sport also supports a junior cycling initiative in Gauteng.
The juniors will have the chance to rub shoulders with some top level national and international riders like Christoph Sauser, Tim Donn, Burry Stander as well as the local professionals from teams MTN Qhubeka and Bonitas.
The Tour de Boland, now in its fifth year after resurrection by the current Road Director of Cycling SA, Hendrik Lemmer, starts in Paarl on March 8, and finishes in the Main Street of Paarl, in front of De Oude Paarl Boutique Hotel in Friday 11 March, 500 km and 10 mountain summits later.
