Entry deadline extended for Msunduzi Road Challenge

Three-distance options for Msunduzi Road Challenge

The deadline for entries for the Msunduzi Road Challenge has been extended to allow for the flurry of last minute interest in the event. Normal entries were due to close on Tuesday 18 October but will now be taken until Friday 21 October at 18h00.

"It is the start of the local road cycling season for many rider, and after a successful Amashova a lot of riders are only starting to think about their next big race now," said race director Alec Lenferna.

"The Msunduzi Road Challenge is all about mass participation at a completely amateur level so we have decided to be as accommodating as we can to cater for the requests for entries at this stage," he added.

The race has three options, starting and finishing at Alexandra Park, offering courses of 90km, 111km and 126km over the picturesque and hilly region around Albert falls dam, New Hanover and Dalton.

Lenferna also confirmed that they would be able to take late entries for the road race next week at a penalty of R50, but said that entries for the time trial on Saturday 29 October would have to close to allow them to carefully seed the riders.

The race now offers an option for social and corporate teams of five riders, male or female, which will start at the back of the field and take on the 90km route. Corporate teams enjoy a 20% discount.

With the 2012 Msunduzi Road Challenge having just been awarded the finals of the UCI World Cycling Tour next year, this year's race is a golden opportunity for local riders to secure their qualifications for the tour final, what used to be called the Masters World Championships.

"It's taken some time for that fact to sink in, but we are suddenly getting a lot of enquiries from riders who want to qualify for the 2012 finals in their own backyard by making the top 25% in this year’s race," said Lenferna.
