A good day in the Boland for Fouche
The Le Coq Sportif Tour De Boland which started yesterday in Paarl showcased some excellent riding from the top cyclists in South Africa.
The race, which went through several towns including Paarl ,Wolseley and Wellington, experienced faultless traffic management from the Western Cape Province as well as from the Municipality of Drakenstein, and all others en route.
The Elite (category 1) peloton stayed together up the first ascent, Bainskloof, where Burry Stander got the King of the Mountain hot spot. On the treacherous descent towards Wolseley nine riders which included DCM’s Herman Fouche, SA Champion and recent Tour of SA stage winner Darren Lill as well as MTN Qhubeka’s Christoff van Heerden got away into a race winning break.
Although the MTN Qhubeka and the Cape Town Market outfits were driving the peloton relentlessly, they could not close the gap in time and Fouche sprinted off the front to take the leaders jersey by less than a bike length, in front of Van Heerden. Johann Rabie who was second overall on the recent Tour of SA, sprinted into third.
In the Category 2 race the Clover Woman’s leader jersey was won by Cherise Taylor and the ASG Junior leader was Oliver Stapleton Cotton.
Today's stage of 135 kilometres will have two big mountain passes and we expect that this will play a major role in the standings.
