Janse Van Rensburg rides to victory in Knysna
The Pick n Pay Weekend Argus Rotary Knysna road race took place on Sunday at the ever popular Knysna Oyster Festival.
Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg (MTN Energade) took victory by winning the bunch sprint behind the two man break that had stayed clear of the rest. Teammate Jaco Venter with Arran Brown of Medscheme third
Sunday's road race took riders from Knysna, towards the Wilderness and then up the 'Hoekwil' climb before returning to Knysna after 100km. A break established itself on the climb near the halfway point, and contained Kevin Evans, Jaco Venter, Adrien Niyonshuti and Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg (all MTN), who were followed by team Medscheme riders Hanco Kachelhoffer and Johann Rabie as well as two riders from the House of Paints Jason Bakke and Tiaan Kannemeyer.
Janse van Rensburg recounts his race: “My team-mates and I decided that we were going to maintain a fast pace in an effort to tire the other riders. To make a long story short, at Sedgefield the ‘elastic’ snapped. This meant that Jaco, Hanco, Jason and I were the only four riders left in the breakaway.”
Janse van Rensburg attacked over the last climb, going alone, and eventually Venter joined him, and the two went to the end together, with Janse van Rensburg winning it!
The rest of the race caught up with Bakke and Kachelhoffer, and Arran Brown (Medscheme) won the sprint for third from Edwards and Hondricks.
The results:
1st Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg (MTN) 2:26:57
2nd Jaco Venter (MTN)
