Kachelhoffer's turn at the top, Engen Dynamic Cycle ChallengeMonday, 23 August 2010 13:59 Kachelhoffer's turn at the top in the Engen Dynamic Cycle ChallengeDurban and the Moses Mabhida Stadium was the venue of the Engen Dynamic Cycle Challenge, where Hanco Kachelhoffer of Team Medscheme narrowly beat his two breakaway companions. Bradley Potgieter (MTN Energade) and David Maree (House of Paint) had spent the best part of 70km with Kachelhoffer in a closed road tour of Durban, Pinetown, the Bluff and Amanzimtoti. Their break established itself after a split in the field after the dreaded M19 climb into Pinetown. A large break had formed after 20kms, but a further attack by Potgieter sparked the threesome. The remaining chase group was large, but with many representatives of the front riders teams, there was a small but spirited chase from EMG's Loto and Day, and Toyota Supercycling National academy riders Brown and Kruger. They kept in sight of the leaders, but after the mini tour of the hills of the Bluff, were losing their impetus. With the front trio gaining ground, they followed the lead vehicles on a slight wrong turn, which resulted in their lead being extended. It was agreed that the front race could continue, as the chances of the three being reeled in by the chase were slim. The run in through Durban CBD was calm, and the threesome contested the sprint. Maree, perhaps the slowest of the group was forced to lead out, and Kachlehoffer (who had lost a race two weeks prior in the sprint to Potgieter) made his bid for the line from behind. Maree and Potgieter fought to get into his slip, bumping each other a little, slowing their momentum which gave Kachelhoffer just that little bit more advantage to hold off Potgieter and win the race! Kachelhoffer acknowledged the slight bad luck for Potgieter, but the racing was fair, and things can sometimes happen in the split seconds of a sprint finish. Maree was also pleased to be on the podium, but sorry that he had accidentally bumped with his friend Potgieter, which was unintentional on his part. The sprint for fourth by the chase group two minutes later was won by Arran Brown (Team Medscheme) from Dean Edwards (House of Paint) and Tyler Day (EMG Cycling). "It was a great event which was exciting, safe, and well controlled from a traffic point of view. As pro's we enjoy a race that takes in different area's and terrain. Despite the race being technical, it was well marked, (unfortunately the lead vehicle took us on a slight detour), but I don't think that it impacted on the race too much" said Kachelhoffer, " I thought I had a chance to win, but against Brad it is never certain in the sprint, especially after he beat me two weeks ago! I think my timing was good, just a bit unlucky for the two behind me as they bumped." Team Medscheme's Nic White: " we really enjoyed the race in Durban, well organised closed roads, Durbs seems to get properly involved in sporting events!" The Results: 100km 1st Hanco Kachelhoffer (team medscheme) 2:28:00
