The Hoff takes Amashova

The battle for team supremacy in Sunday’s Amashova Durban Cycle Classic came down to a head to head confrontation between Johannesburg-based Nolan Hoffmann and Herman Fouche’, a prediction correctly depicted by top Sports Journalists, in the absence of defending champion Arran Brown who is currently campaigning in Australia this week with his MTN Qhubeka team.

2011 Amashova Durban Cycle Classic which cyclists have been tackling for a quarter of a century and keep coming back for more, ended at the Moses Mabhida Stadium after a gruelling 106km from Pietermaritzburg.

A difficult race with wet conditions at the start had the riders coming in slightly slower this year as well as lots of action on route with some minor wipe outs due to the weather.

The Hoff certainly dominated the sprint to the finish and is the Amashova’s new champion of this prestigious race, winning in a time of 2.24.08
Leading lady, Ashleigh Moolman of Cape Town took top honours in a time of 2:49:06, just ahead of Joanna van de Winkel in second and Lisa Olivier in third place.

Also at this year’s event, being the 25th anniversary, cyclists taking part in the Amashova Durban Classic went to interesting lengths to “Help start a new story”. After 38km on the road on Sunday during the East Coast Radio family fun ride, riders generously dropped all sorts of shiny new toys into the ECR Toy Story boxes at the finish line. As part of the station’s initiative these toys will be distributed to children in need across the province, including little ones who’ve been orphaned or who are in paediatric wards at government hospitals.

With over 10 000 riders participating in this year’s event and R100 000 in prize money, the Amashova Durban Cycle classic certainly ended on a high.
