Taylor not letting broken nose hinder SA champs defenceThursday, 06 January 2011 16:25 Broken nose doesn't hinder SA ChampCherise Taylor, the reigning South African women’s road cycling champion, suffered a broken nose when she misjudged a traffic boom while training on Sunday. But the 21-year-old Team USN rider says that it looks worse than if feels and is still in full training mode as she prepares to defend her national title in Port Elizabeth early next month. Taylor was training on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast with her fiancé, international mountain bike racing star, Burry Stander, when she mistimed a traffic boom that caught her on the bridge of her nose. “We normally have to ride close behind a car to get through the boom as it’s only set to open for motor vehicles. But I was just a bit too slow on Sunday’s ride,” explained Taylor, who says her nose and one eye are blue from the incident. “I didn’t think it was too bad, but when I saw a doctor today, I got him to check it out and he confirmed it is definitely fractured. Luckily, it’s not skew!” she smiled. Taylor says that her breathing isn’t hindered, but that sneezing is painful. “It won’t affect my training. I’ve been putting in some excellent training rides during the festive season and expect to be in peak condition for SA Champs, which is a bit earlier in the year than normal.”
