Stander teams up with USN

Olympic medal contender, Burry Stander, has teamed up with USN, a leading sports nutrition brand, for 2011. The former U23 World Champion in the Olympic Cross-country discipline is one of South Africa’s strongest medal hopes for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Stander, who races for the international Specialized professional team, will be working in conjunction with USN’s Research and Development team to help fine-tune formulations of the brand’s endurance sport supplements. USN is the largest sports nutrition supplement brand in South Africa and one of the largest in the United Kingdom, with international expansion underway in the United States, Europe and Australasia.

In 2010, USN was Stander’s nutrition supplement sponsor. Stander won bronze medals at the Olympic Cross-country World Championships and the Marathon World Championships, a rare feat that emphasised the versatility of the 23-year-old, competing in his first year outside the U23 division.

“USN is a brand that’s at the forefront of nutrition science. In this sport, so much emphasis goes into equipment, while energy and recovery are often forgotten, but are extremely important. USN understands this and uses feedback from its athletes, which is something that really makes sense to me and a key reason for this partnership,” said Stander.

“Burry is one of the world’s biggest mountain bike racing stars and is widely known and respected, which works well with our international expansion of USN. He is one of the most educated professional athletes we have worked with when it comes to nutritional needs and will form an integral part of the R&D in our endurance sport supplement range,” said Albe Geldenhuys, founder and chairman of USN.

Stander’s main focus in 2011 is on the Olympic Cross-country discipline, both in South Africa and abroad. In March he will once again team up with former World Champion and Swiss teammate, Christoph Sauser, in an effort to win the ABSA Cape Epic, the world’s most prestigious mountain bike stage race. Stander will also compete in selected road races and marathon mountain bike races, which are extremely popular in South Africa.
