Race report: Team Medscheme gets solid results at Knysna MTB by Nic White

Team Medscheme had two riders in the MTB Race the previous day. Waylon Woolcock and Neil Macdonald finished 7th and 8th respectively in what is a very popular race in winter!

In the mountain bike race - Neil MacDonald had this to say - " Waylon and I started the MTB race, and in the first few climbs the top guys really jammed it. I managed to jump across over the first climb to the front, but the speed on the downhill was too intense! I lost some ground, and eventually rode steadily on towards the end, finishing with Waylon."

Waylon and Neil about to start the race that went through mountain bikers paradise!

"It is really tough on the body to race mountain bikes, and I can see why the top mountain bikers are so strong on the road as well!"

Kevin Evans who has been second in this race on five occasions had this to say about the race after he finished second to David George: “Just imagine that I had won the race six times in a row. It would have become extremely boring. There is something dramatic about finishing second five times. At least it sounds as if I am trying to win and not giving up.

Evans had attacked on the second big climb, and only George could follow.

“We worked well together for about 20 kilometers. While we were riding together, I realized that I had a slow leaking tyre. As luck would have it, my gas bomb did not work." said Evans, who was given a bomb by George, and that gesture kept him up front.

In the final sprint between the two, they had to pass slower rider traffic from the 15km race, George took the best line and won the race from Evans.

“I take my hat off to David because, when I asked him if I could use his bomb, he did not hesitate for a moment to help me out. It was true sportsmanship. The easy thing for David would have been to simply say ‘no’ and keep on cycling.” said Evans, pleased to have been able to contend for the win, but content with second.
