Team bizhub leads Joburg2c MTB raceThursday, 29 April 2010 13:57 Former Pick ’n Pay 94.7 Cycle Challenge champion Yolandi du Toit and team-mate Lise Olivier have dominated the first six days of the event that stretches over 923km between Johannesburg and Scottburgh on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. All that is left is to successfully negotiate the final three days, which is a repeat of last month’s three-stage Subaru sani2c in which they placed on the podium in their first ride together. Although today’s stage of 86km between the Underberg Polo Grounds and the Mackenzie Country Club will be their immediate focus, Du Toit believed tomorrow’s penultimate day was the last major obstacle en route to her first big victory of the season. “Although the worst is over, I expect Friday to be quite challenging. In essence it is the second day of the sani2c, which was the toughest of that race.” Du Toit said she was looking forward to entering familiar roads after almost a week’s racing over unknown terrain. “At least we now know what to expect, so we can adapt our tactics accordingly.” She said although they were both “a bit sore”, everything had gone great thus far. “This race is simply about keeping going. If you push yourself into the red, you’re asking for trouble.” Du Toit, who replaced ill team-mate Ischen Stopforth a mere two days before the start, said she and Olivier was currently riding at a “similar level”. “We’ve really been combining well and have been able to extend our lead each day.” She said it was important not to take any chances during the final three days, especially in the prevailing wet conditions that had made the roads treacherous. “It has rained every single day, which has caught us slightly off guard.” Marleen Roberts and Catherine Lourens (Ducky Muds) are currently lying in second with Brenda Potts and Leannie Lange (Team Medscheme) third. There will be little respite for the Team bizhub duo after Saturday’s final stage with both entered for the 105km Tour Durban the following day.
