Sports event skills taught by multisport outfit

Karatara was the host venue on Saturday 22 May 2010, when the TSiBA Eden and Magnetic South teams got together to take this unique Sports Eventing Community Development Project into its third module.

This project was initiated in late April 2010 when The Featherbed Company got behind the Community Development opportunity and allowed Magnetic South, who are driving the process, access to the Featherbed Nature Reserve and infrastructure to organise a day long introduction to what is involved in putting together a sports event.

Following the Featherbed Training/Selection day the 27 TSiBA Eden students had to undergo a written exam on what they had covered before being allowed to continue through to a further training and selection weekend that took place on the TSiBA Eden Campus in Karatara.

In the latest module the students skill levels were further put to the test by splitting the large group into smaller units who in turn were asked to put together every aspect of a sports event utilising the know how, infrastructure and equipment supplied by Magnetic South. For many who arrive to participate in a sports event they do not see what goes into making this all happen and for the TSiBA Eden students it was an eye opening experience to have this background and just how much is involved.

The smaller student groups were taken through all the steps from scouting and creating a route to setting up the event infrastructure, handling registrations and the timing of the athletes. Field teams had to get to grips with marking and managing their selected routes to ensure all the competing athletes knew where to go and what to do. Each one of the TSiBA students was evaluated by their appointed Magnetic South instructor and in consultation with TSiBA Business Manager, Linden Booth, a short list of candidates was selected to advance to the next module which will include more focussed training in the specific area in which they have impressed.

“This Community Project has been an extremely satisfying experience for all of us to manage and give of our time. Participants in the upcoming Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival can look forward to interacting with the newly trained students on the Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by Petzl plus the weekend cycle and marathon events as well. We have a sustainable working module and the proof of its success is now being measured with this project being positively acknowledged within the local events industry,” said Chris Crewdson of Magnetic South.
