Caveman wins inaugral Garmin West Coast WWWThursday, 01 April 2010 16:39 Event organiser Paul Ingpen says participants ranged from families to hard core competitors, but the key ingredient to the weekend was the social element. “Roasting marshmallows under the stars and enjoying live unplugged music and red wine beside the bonfire during Earth Hour was a classic moment and one we’ll remember for a long time to come.” The triathlon included a 2km lagoon swim, 60km road time trial and a 12km trail run. The men’s event was won in 3:01:19 by multiple XTERRA world champion Conrad Stoltz, while Tanya Weyers came out top in the women’s race in a time of 4:26:09. Lieuwe Boonstra and Marsel Roos came second and third respectively in the men’s race, with Vanessa Marle and Abbey de Beer rounding off the podium in the women’s race. Sunday’s activities were focused on enjoying the beautiful natural surrounds and included two trail runs, two MTB events, a paddle, guided walks and a kids race. The 10km trail run was won by Kevin Flanagan, while Tristan Kelly beat the field in the 14km trail run. The 44km MTB event was won by Matthew Clarke, while the 50km saw organiser vs athlete as Paul Ingpen and Conrad Stoltz shared top honours. The West Coast National Park is known for its bird-watching and participants were delighted by the pink flamingos and other water birds. Ingpen said that the private Postberg section of the West Coast National Park is closed for 11 months of the year and only opened for the event participants. The beautiful park setting - which hosts no other multisports events - was one of the main contributing factors to the success of the event. “The combination of beautiful setting, great outdoor activities and a group of like-minded individuals really set the Warm Water Weekend apart from similar events. The only request we’ve had is to turn the event into a four-day event next year – two days were simply not enough!”
