Momentum Health Duathlon Series sets Northern Farm alightWednesday, 12 May 2010 10:58 Momentum Health Duathlon Series sets Northern Farm alightWell not literally. But there was furious action at the head of the field at round three of the Momentum Health I-Flex National Duathlon Series. Clear skies, mild temperatures and a slight breeze set the perfect stage for this off road event at Northern Farm just west of Fourways in Gauteng. A record number of participants took part at this round, which is not surprising given the location. Soon after the brats and kiddies races was concluded the main race got going. Notable names in the women’s elite category were Carla van Huysteen (Germishuys) from Nestle Pure Life and Carolyn Coll from Asics, who achieved a ninth place overall at Ironman two weeks prior. In the mens elite category, Brand du Plessis , Lieuwe Boonstra, Stuart Marais and David Labuschagne were the clear favourites. From the outset Carla van Huyssteen opened up a lead that she never relinquished and claimed a very convincing win. A one sided affair maybe but there was frantic change of positions taking place behind between Carolyn Koll, Willmarie du Plessis, Nadia Pretorius and the surprise package of the day, Adele Drake. After the 5km run/20km mountain bike/2.5km run, Drake managed a well-deserved second behind Van Huyssteen and Du Plessis in third. The men’s race followed a very similar format as Brand du Plessis was back at his best and lead from start to finish. The fight for the remaining podium positions was never a done deal as Marais, Labuschagne and Boonstra constantly changed positions on the mountain bike route. Finally Du Plessis was back to winning form, coming first, with a strong performance by Boonstra in second and another surprise on the day, Labuschagne pipping Marais for third place. Point standings after three events: Open Men: 1. Brand du Plessis 56 2. Stuart Marais 53 3. Lieuwe Boonstra 39 4. David Labushagne 26 5. Jacob Lalou 23 Open women: 1. Nadia Pretorius 45 2. Carla van Huyssteen 39 3. Andrea Steyn 38 4. Carlyn Fisher 34 5. Wilmarie du Plessis 31 The next event takes place on Sunday 1 August in the friendly city of Port Elizabeth.
