Time running out for Comrades 2011 entries
Aspiring Comrades 2011 runners should take heed – the eleventh hour is here. Having already amassed 17,005 entries to next year’s 86th Ultimate Human Race, the countdown to the entry closure has begun, meaning only 995 entries are available. Comrades enthusiasts who have not entered the iconic race as yet, have until close of business tomorrow (30.11.2010) or as soon as the 18,000 cap has been reached.
Interest in the Rainbow Nation’s premier sporting event has been heightened since being recognized by the Guinness World Records for being the biggest ultra-marathon in the world. Naturally, the official organizing body of the event, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is confident of another successful staging of the renowned race.
Comrades 2011 will be an ‘up-run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 29 May 2011, starting outside the Durban City Hall at 5h30 and ending at The Cricket Oval in Alexandra Park, Pietermaritzburg, 12 hours later. Novices and former Comrades runners, who are up for the challenge, are encouraged to enter within the next 24 hours to avoid disappointment as only one entry window period for all athletes has been provided and no extensions will be allowed.
Entry forms are available at all Mr Price Home, Sport and Clothing stores as well as Sportsman Warehouse outlets, local running clubs, provincial sporting federations and the CMA. Alternatively, prospective participants may hand deliver or post their completed entry forms and proof of payment to the CMA offices in Pietermaritzburg. Online entries can be accessed on the CMA website, www.comrades.com
Says CMA General Manager Gary Boshoff: ‘Due to logistical constraints and the sheer number of participants, we will not be able to extend the entry period. We value the enduring support of all athletes and therefore request that all potential Comrades 2011 participants take note of the closing date and the limited time available.’
He adds: ‘The 86th running of The Ultimate Human Race will undoubtedly maintain the strides made this year, where 14,343 runners made it to the finish line and got the Comrades Marathon onto the record-breaking books.’
