One entry window for Comrades Marathon 2011
After the extremely successful 85th Comrades Marathon this year, organisers of the world’s most enduring race are happy with the ever-growing local and global interest in the event, that has catapulted South Africa on the international sporting map.
The 2010 Comrades Marathon is testament to its worldwide allure, having amassed the second largest field in its history, surpassed only by the millennium race in 2000.
Naturally, the Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) is upbeat about the future of the nation-building event, and officially launched the 2011 Comrades Marathon in Johannesburg last month. Entries to the race formally opened on Spring Day, being the first of September and close on 30 November 2010. The race will be an ‘up-run’ from Durban to Pietermaritzburg on Sunday, 29 May 2011.
Please note that there will be one entry window period for all athletes, so novices and former Comrades runners alike, are urged to make their entries early to avoid disappointment. More than 8,000 entries have already been received. The number of participants in Comrades 2011 has been capped at eighteen-thousand and no extensions will be entered into.
Entry forms are available at all Mr Price Home, Sport and Clothing stores as well as Sportsman Warehouse outlets, local running clubs, provincial sporting federations and the CMA. Alternatively, prospective participants may hand deliver or post their completed entry forms and proof of payment to the CMA offices in Pietermaritzburg in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands.
Online entries can be effected on the official CMA website, www.comrades.com As always, entry to the race is on a first come first serve basis.
Says CMA General Manager Mr Gary Boshoff: ‘We are confident that the 2011 race will maintain the accomplishments of the 2010 Comrades Marathon. We expect a surge in interest from novices worldwide, but mostly from South African athletes who have rediscovered the lure of the Comrades Marathon as a national icon and one of the “must do’s” for sportsmen and women’.
