Entries stream in for Two Oceans Half Marathon

The Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon race office has captured a record number of half marathon entries in the month since entries open on 1 November.  To date 7 046 entries have been received for the half marathon and with the cut off confirmed at 11 500, there is every indication that this target will be reached by early January.

In comparison, only 2 102 entries for the 2010 event had been received at the same time last year and entries had to close in February, earlier than the normal entry closing date.  The closing date for entries for next year’s event is 16 March 2011, or earlier if the cut off is reached.

Ultra marathon entries are coming in a little slower although in comparison to last year at this time they have doubled.  Last year the race office had 566 entries for the 56km event compared to 1 014, which have been received so far.

Race director Rowyn James is thrilled with the response to date.  “We have a total of 8 060 entries and there’s every indication that we will see a record field line up on Saturday 23 April next year.  Last year at this time we only had 2 668 entries.”

Those runners wanting to take part in the half marathon next year are urged to enter as soon as possible to avoid missing out.  Enter online at www.twooceansmarathon.org.za or pick up an entry form from leading sports stores countrywide.  Runners taking part in the ultra event will need to qualify before they can enter and should visit www.twooceansmarathon.org.za for a full list of upcoming qualifying marathons.

A total of 366 international entries have been received so far and donations to Bobs for Good, the official charity for the event, currently stand at R66 742, almost R23 000 up on the same time last year.

He added that the race office was delighted with the generosity runners had shown towards the charity so far, and that they were also expecting to break all records in this department as well.
