Top road runners for Bestmed Tuks Race 2011Thursday, 17 February 2011 08:06 Top middle distance road runners for Bestmed Tuks RaceThe 2011 Bestmed Tuks Race will see some of the country's elite long-distance athletes in action on February 19 as they go in search of the top prize over 21km.There are talented fields in both the Men's and Women's races with performers who have won medals locally and abroad. It makes the Bestmed Tuks Race among the most prestigious in the country as athletes fight it out over 21km and 10km, while there are also 5km and 1km races for young and old. “We are thrilled to have such a top field competing in the 2011 Bestmed Tuks Race. It is a reminder that, along with those that just want to compete for fun and exercise, there are medals and prize-money to be won and competition will no doubt be fierce given the pedigree of the elite runners we will have on show,” says Dries La Grange, Principal Officer of Bestmed. The sponsorship of the 2011 Bestmed Tuks Race follows a similar partnership with the Bestmed Eersterust Marathon that took place on January 15 of this year, another community development initiative that forms part of Bestmed's social investment calendar. The elite athletes running on Saturday will have their eyes on the marathon records for the BESTmed Tuks Race, with the first man or women crossing the line in a record time in the 10km and 21km races able to double their prize-money! The current course records for the 10km run are 29:37 for men and 35:39 for women. In the 21km race, the records stand at 65:06 for men and 77:21 for women. The winning male and female runners in the full 21.1-kilometre race will each earn R5 000 in prize-money, with a total of R66 100 to be won across all the various distances and age-groups.
