Mockè brothers take doubles title

The KIA SA Surfski Championships continued in East London yesterday with ISPA World Champ Dawid Mockè and younger brother Jasper Mockè taking home victory in the doubles race.

The race which formed part of the Eastern and Western Cape Discovery Sunglass Hut Surf Ski Series had a fleet of over 70 double boats lined up set to better their singles standings set the day before. After already having tackled and won the singles race on Saturday, Dawid Mockè took time to carefully study the wind charts up until to two hours before the race, which proved to be beneficial to the recently named Western Cape Sportsman of the Year.

The Mockè brothers took an excellent early line near the start at Orient beach, which lead them onto a much deeper outside line similar to the winning line Dawid he used for in the singles race. Hank McGregor and Grant van der Walt decided on taking an inside line approximately 800 meters out and had the rest of the field opting to follow their line.

The strong field powered through the 22.8 kilometre course in a 10 to 15 knot South Westerly breeze in no more than four metre swells with very little sight of the leading boat. The Mockè crew powered home to take the gold in just over an hour and fifteen minutes. They soon welcomed current Hansa Powerade Fish marathon winners Van der Walt and McGregor who claimed the second position, followed by the Peninsula duo of Sean Rice and Tom Schilperoort in third.

The Durban crew of Herman Chalupsky and Matthew Bouman snuck into fourth followed by Dayle Houzet and Adam Botham topping off the top five boats. The crew consisting of current Eastern Cape Discovery Sunglass Hut series leader Richard von Wildemann and Durban paddler Barry Lewin came in with an unlikely thirteenth position, after their inside line taking them a little too close to shore had them break their boat on a reef and having no choice but to run the remainder of the course to the finish line.

The ladies race had Olympian star and winner of the ladies single KIA SA Ski Champs, Michéle Eray paired with and Nikki Mockè in an impressive partnership. The duo cleaned up the ladies field with a win over seven minutes ahead of the Eastern Cape series regulars Kerry Louw and Kirstin Wessles who came in second, followed by juniors Catherine Atkinson and Kellyn Thompson in third.

Youngsters Craig Flanagan and Dominic Notten were the first juniors home in just over one hour and twenty-eight minutes, followed by Luke McNish and Jason Aubin.

The Discovery Sunglass Hut Surfski Series continues in the Eastern Cape with the PE bell Buoy Dice on 21 November and in the Western Cape with the Discovery Oceana Race on 21 November.
