Free surfski clinics to schools aiming for SA Schools Surfski ChampsThursday, 10 February 2011 12:43 SA Schools Surfski Champs headed for DurbanSchool pupils preparing for the 2011 edition of the Varsity College SA Schools Surfski Champs in just over a month’s time have been offered free lessons and training from ace surfski paddler and series organiser Barry Lewin, who runs the weekly Varsity College Surfski School at Addington beach.As part of a drive to get as many youngsters involved in the sport and in preparation for this big event the Varsity College Surfski School is offering free clinics to any school that wishes to get involved. A class takes place every Friday afternoon at 3pm and two more every Saturday morning at 11am and 12am at the Marine Lifesaving Club on Addington Beach and all equipment and safety gear is supplied. Westville Boys’ High School were the first to take advantage of this great opportunity when a group of their pupils converged on the Marine Surf Lifesaving Club for the first of the clinics and organisers are expecting another seven or eight schools to follow suit over the next couple of weeks. The remaining classes take place on 11, 12, 18, 19, 25, 26 February and 4, 5 March and to book your school’s slot or to find out more call Barry Lewin on 083 710 1351. The champs will again form part of the tenth and final leg of the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series on the 25th of March and entrants will compete over an 8km course with the winner of the champs walking away with the SA Schools title, some well-earned prize money as well as a Varsity College Scholarship worth an impressive R40000.
