McGregor, Eder wrap up Varsity College Marine Surfski Series 2011

Grey SW conditions belie red-hot action at Series final

Hank McGregor and Michelle Eder secured their overall series victories in the Varsity College Marine Surfski Series on a night of racing that saw Western Cape lifesaving star Dominic Notten snatch the boys SA Schools title and Toti flyer Kerry Segal retain her title in the girls division.

McGregor had to down a feisty Grant van der Walt in a thrilling end to the overall race, and securing overall series honours in the absence of the man who has pushed him hard through the ten race series Matt Bouman, who was away on a sprint camp.

“It was a tough night out there this evening,” said McGregor. “I made a poor tactical move early on and I had to dig really deep to try catch Grant van der Walt after he got off to a brilliant start.”

“Fortunately I was able to draw on a bit of my experience and I just beat him on the line and so I’m obviously super stoked to walk away with the win tonight and the series!” he added.

Eder secured her third series title in a row, a feat the paddler from Toti is very proud of but there’s more to it than just results for this Marine Series participant.

“As always  I just love being able to come down on a Friday evening, paddle against everyone, get some exercise and really start my weekend off on an awesome note, so the win is great but it’s not the only thing I focus on,” she said.

Despite the arrival late in the afternoon of the strong South Easterly wind, the race course based at Marine SLC was sheltered by the Bluff and offered the paddlers fast flat and almost surf-less racing conditions for the 4km short course and 8km long course races.
