Nine medals at Swimming World Cup in Singapore

Townsend, van der Burgh in the gold in Singapore

The South African swimming team added another nine medals to conclude the third leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in Singapore today.

First in the water was Darian Townsend who claimed gold in the 200m freestyle with a time of 1:44.30. Canada’s Brian Johns came a close second in 1:44.63 with Australia’s Kyle Richardson in third with 1:44.67.

Later on in the evening, Townsend raced to his second medal, this time silver in the 200m individual medley clocking 1:54.58 behind Brazil’s Thiago Pereira.

There is no stopping Cameron van der Burgh. Tshwane’s golden boy raced to another win in the 100m breaststroke in a time of 57.82, a full second ahead of Japan’s Naoya Tomita with the bronze medal going to Kazuki Otsuka from Japan in 59.73.

Kathryn Meaklim bagged an extra two bronze medals to wrap up the third leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in the 400m individual medley in 4:42.62 and the 200m breaststroke in 2:28.08.

Pengelly, on the other hand, claimed two silvers tonight in the 400m freestyle in 4:08.50 behind New Zealand’s Melissa Ingram and in the 400m individual medley with 4:36.37.

Roland Schoeman and George du Rand also raced to silvers in the 50m freestyle (21.43) and 200m backstroke (1:53.17) respectively.

Schoeman, Townsend, Ferns, Moore and Du Rand will now head for the fourth leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup taking place in Tokyo (20/21 October).
