Open Swim season starts in Eastern Cape

User Rating: / 2

The Eastern Cape open water swimming season kicked off in fine style on Sunday morning with the first round of the EPA Swim Challenge Series taking place at Marina Martinique in Jeffreys Bay. With five rounds in the Series this season to give swimmers the ideal opportunity to qualify for the SA Open water swimming championships which will be held in Nelson Mandela Bay next year, a turnout of over 50 swimmers took part.

Grey High school scholar Christopher van de Sande (17) showed that he is already in top form, winning both the Cirrus 3km and 5km open water swim races. Van de Sande, defending Ocean Racing Series 1km champion, showed grit and determination to stamp his authority and lead from start to finish in both events, eventually finishing the 5km race in 1hr 1min, a full 13 minutes under the SA qualifying time of 1hr 15min. Equally impressive was the recently crowned African Games 5km ladies champion, Jessica Roux who finished 2nd overall in a time of 1hr 2min, some 17 minutes under the ladies qualifying time of 1hr 20min. Local Kouga Swim coach, Brenton Williams, won the 5km 40-49 age group category with Russell Tucker claiming the men's 50 plus age group category in a time of 1hr 23minutes. All in all, 7 swimmers achieved SA qualifying times in the 5km swim.

In the Cirrus 3km swim, van de Sande was followed home by Wayne Jones and Hanre Barnard whilst Lise-Mari Goosen took the ladies race from Rebecca Newman and Chrislie Niehaus. Daniel Jones won the boys U13 category with JC van Wyk (men's 40-49), Sanmari Woithe (ladies 40 - 49), Russell Tucker (mens 50+) and Denise Bosman (ladies 50+) all winning their categories. No fewer than 16 swimmers in the Cirrus 3km swim managed to achieve the Swim SA qualifying time for this distance.

Also include in this Swimming South African sanctioned Series is a 1km race which was won by Wesley Wiehahn and Tarryn Els and a kids 500m swim which was won by local swimmers Pieter Ellis (9yrs) and Chantelle O'Kennedy (12 years). The next round of the Series will be taking place on Sunday 31 October with a 10km swim taking place at the same venue on Saturday 30th. Full results and information on the Series is available on www.ecswim.co.za
