Gold in 800m free, 50m breast and 50m fly
South Africa's swimming team began the third leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup in Singapore on a high note with eight medals.
To kickstart the evening, the South African ladies collected two medals in the 800m freestyle. Leading from start to finish, Jessica Pengelly raced to her first gold medal of the Series in a time of 8:30.22 while Kathryn Meaklim claimed the bronze in 8:36.32.
It was silver and bronze for Graeme Moore and Lyndon Ferns in the 100m freestyle. Moore and Ferns were in the lead for the first 50m but Australia’s Kyle Richardson came from behind to take the gold in 47.40. Moore ended second in 47.47 followed by Ferns in 47.68.
Cameron van der Burgh continued his golden streak to once again claim the 50m breaststroke title ahead of Roland Schoeman. Van der Burgh improved on his time from Beijing of 26.36 when he touched the wall in 26.21 followed by Schoeman in 26.69. The bronze medal went to Brazil’s Junior Gomes in 26.74.
In the 100m individual medley, Darian Townsend won the silver medal clocking 53.07 behind Thiago Pereira from Brazil in 52.73. The bronze medal was claimed by Russia’s Sergey Fesikov in 53.52.
Roland Schoeman concluded the evening by adding an extra gold medal in the 50m butterfly. Speeding to the finish, Schoeman touched the wall in 22.65, followed by Germany’s Steffen Deibler (22.81) and Japan’s Kohei Kawamoto (23.13).
The Singapore leg of the FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup wraps up on Sunday, following which the swimmers move to Tokyo for the event on the 20 and 21 October.
