SA team claims 57 medals at Youth Games Zone 6
The fourth edition of the SCSA Zone 6 U20 Youth Games in Swaziland concluded tonight with the South African swimming team claiming the top spot on the medal table with a total of 57 medals (30 golds, 22 silver and 5 bronze).
Nico Meyer took the 50m butterfly title and his third gold medal in 25.29 ahead of Frank Greeff’s 25.83. In the previous evening, Meyer also claimed the 50m freestyle gold with a time of 23.20, following close behind was Wesley Morris in 23.33.
In the 400m freestyle, Myles Brown (3:53.47) swept away the opposition when he touched the wall over 11 seconds ahead of team mate Nicholas Kieck (4:05.84). Mozambique’s Nuno Gomes finished with the bronze in 4:45.49.
Marne Erasmus concluded the event on a high note, collecting her fourth gold medal in the 50m freestyle in 27.07. Kristy Muller picked up the silver for South Africa in 27.32. The 15 year old Erasmus bagged two gold medals at the previous evening finals in the 50m butterfly (28.09) and the 50m backstroke (30.47)
Wesley Morris’ gold winning time in the 50m backstroke was 27.30, with Chris van de Sande in second with a time of 28.45.
On day three, Van de Sande raced to two golds in the 200m individual medley (2:05.50) and 200m backstroke (2:06.49). Nicholas Kieck and Wesley Morris walked away with the silvers in the two races, respectfully.
It was gold and silver for Kelly Gunnell and Kristy Muller in the 200m individual medley. Gunnell’s time of 2:23.53 won her her fourth gold medal, having raced to the top of the medal podium in the 200m breaststroke in the previous evening.
Kern Fredericks (2:27.30) and Mikhail Safiedien (2:32.42) swam to a gold and bronze in the 200m breaststroke with the silver medal going to Namibia’s Boris Kulikowski (2:32.09).
Nina Nicholas and Kathryn Baumann made quite a fantastic pair finishing with the gold and silver in the 200m backstroke, having claimed the gold and bronze in the 400m freestyle the night before, respectfully.
To end of what was a highly successful competition for the South African swimming team, it was four gold medals for the relay teams in the men’s 4 x 100m medley and 4 x 50m freestyle as well as the ladies 4 x 50m freestyle and 4 x 100m medley.
