South Africa continues to impress on day four of African Swimming ChampsFriday, 17 September 2010 16:30 Day four of African Swimming Champs and no sign of Team SA slowing downAfter four days of competition, the South African swimming team has no plans of slowing down as the medals and Championships Records continue to pour in at the 10th Senior African Swimming Championships in Casablanca, Morocco. It was young Vanessa Mohr who bagged SA’s first gold medal of the evening in the 100m butterfly with a new Championship Record time of 59.72. Mandy Loots finished second in 59.76 followed by Egypt’s Farida Osman in 1:02.05. Jay-Cee Thomson broke Troyden Prinsloo’s six year standing Championship record in the 400m freestyle when he touched the wall in 3:53.12 while Devon Brown claimed the bronze in 3:57.64. Kathryn Meaklim won bonze in the 100m breaststroke in 1:12.11 behind Morocco’s Sara el Bekri who swam a new Championship best time of 1:10.82 with the silver going to Tunisia’s Sarra Lajnef (1:12.05). William Diering broke his own Championships Record set in 2008 when he raced a 2:15.65 in the 200m breaststroke. Sofiane Daid (2:16.53) of Algeria took the silver and Sherif Madkour (2:19.25) of Egypt the bronze. In the 800m freestyle, it was Kathryn Meaklim who came out tops in 8:55.12. Rene Warnes was in the lead throughout the race but Meaklim’s sprint in the last 100m proved too strong and Warnes finished a close second with 8:57.42. Jay-Cee Thomson, Wesley Gilchrist, Neil Watson and Werner Bosman closed the forth day of the competition with a new Championship Record in the 4 x 100m freestyle relay clocking 3:23.99.
