South African swimmers double their medal count on Day two

The South African swimming team is flying the country’s flag high as they doubled their medal count from 11 to 22 on the second day of the 10th Senior African Swimming Championships in Casablanca, Morocco last night.

First in the water was Neil Watson claiming the silver medal in the 100m butterfly clocking 53.80 with Garth Tune racing to the bronze with a time of 54.35.

In the 200m freestyle, Leone Vorster was over 2 seconds ahead of the group when she touched the wall in 2:02.75 followed by country mate Rene Warnes in 2:04.95 with the bronze medal going to Tunisia’s Zaineb Khalfallah (2:05.09).

After winning the silver medal in the 200m freestyle the previous evening, Jay-Cee Thomson went one better by winning gold and breaking the Championships Record in the 400m individual medley with a time of 4:21.06. Devon Brown claimed SA’s second bronze of the night with 4:32.52 in the same event. Later on in the evening Devon raced to yet another medal, claiming bronze in the 800m freestyle (8:12.58).

In a very closely contested 200m breaststroke race, Kathryn Meaklim finished third in 2:32.77, with Sarra Lajnet from Tunisia coming first in 2:32.16 and Morocco’s Sara el Bekri in second with 2:32.43.

William Diering added another medal to his name with a bronze in the 50m breaststroke, finishing in 29.26.

The women’s 50m butterfly proved to be the race of the evening with one of the closest finishes of the competition so far. Egypt’s Farida Osman (27.28) was a mere 100th of a second faster than Vanessa Mohr (27.29). Chanelle van Wyk completed the medal placings with 27.59. All three medallists were inside the Championship Record time of 27.66, which was previously held by Mandy Loots.
