Du Toit, Ho heading to Canada
Swimming South Africa will be sending a strong team to the FINA Open Water Swimming World Championships in Roberval, Canada from 15-23 July.
After their outstanding performances at the Telkom SA Open Water Championships in April, Chad Ho and Natalie Du Toit were given the nod by Swimming SA.
Ho and Du Toit will be swimming in the 5km and 10km races
Ho made history in 2009 when he won Bronze at the World Championships in Rome in the 5km race – the first South African to medal at an Open Water World Championships. A year before that Ho had finished 9th at the Olympic Games in the 10km Open Water Swim. This all before he was 21.
Du Toit needs no introduction. A list of honours that goes on longer than most people’s arms, Du Toit is a multiple Paralympic World Record Holder and Gold Medalist. 2010 in particular is a very hard year for Du Toit. “I had the Disabled Games in March (15 races in 2 days), Nationals in April (Open Water and in the Pool), the Mare Nostrum Series in June. The in July there is the Open Water Season including the World Championships, August it is the IPC Championships before the Commonwealth Games in October.” Medaling at the Open Water World Championships will certainly be a major feather in the 26 year olds incredible life. In Beijing at the Olympics, she finished 16th after her swimming cap gave her problems. That same year she was 5.1 seconds off the winner of the World Open Water Championships in Sevilla, finishing 4th.
