Mare Nostrum bronze for Trott and Schoeman
The Mare Nostrum Series came to a fitting conclusion tonight as Wendy Trott and Roland Schoeman both claimed bonze in Canet.
Trott claimed a well deserved second bronze medal of the Series in the 800m freestyle last night in a time of 8:34.25 behind Australia’s Blair Evans (8:33.25) and French golden girl Coralie Balmy (8:31.53). Trott also won bronze in the 800m freestyle in Barcelona a few days earlier.
In the 50m butterfly, Roland Schoeman improved on his timing from Barcelona to also race to his second bronze of the Series. It was one of the tightest races tonight as Schoeman ended in a time of 23.97secs (24.13 secs was Schoeman’s time in Barcelona), with Australian Geoff Huegill just ahead with 23.95 and German Steffen Deibler in first with 23.89.
The team will now be heading to compete in the Sette Colli in Italy from the 17-19 June before the 21 swimmers move to Koper in Slovenia for a training camp from 21 June to 2 July in preparation for the Youth Olympic Games in August and the Commonwealth Games in October.
