Versfeld dominates 200m Breaststroke
Chad Le Clos won his second medal in as many as two days and Neil Versfeld claimed Gold on the final day of the Sette Colli Trophy in Pescara, Italy tonight.
Le Clos, who had won Gold in the 200m Butterfly the previous night, had to settle for Bronze this time round in the men’s 200m individual medley. Going into the race, Hungary’s Laszlo Cseh had the 4th fastest time of the year and was race favorite. He duly lived up to that billing with his 1:59.14 – the 6th fastest time of the year. Despite his normal second half charge, Le Clos was not able to close down Vytautas Janusaitis who claimed silver in 2:01.67. Le Clos, who had been trailing Janusaitis by just under two seconds at the half way mark brought the deficit down to just over a second, but had to settle for the Bronze in 2:02.85.
Neil Versfeld then put in a dominant performance in the men’s 200m Breaststroke. Versfeld had a small edge at 50m over Hungary’s Akos Molnar (29.64sec - 29.88sec), but at the halfway mark, they touched together. Versfeld then began to forge ahead. 150m went by in 1:37.87 (Molnar 1:38.66) and touched the wall first after four lengths of the pool with a time of 2:12.88. Molnar was second (2:14.19), just ahead of Great Britain’s Michael Jamieson’s 2:14.25.
The Swim SA squad now moves into a training camp in Koper in Slovenia from 21 June to the 2 July in preparation for the Youth Olympics in August and Commonwealth Games in October.
