U20 Youth Games squad heads to Swaziland

The South African swimming team will be looking to make the country proud when they participate in the 4th edition of the SCSA Zone 6 U20 Youth Games taking place in Swaziland from the 12th to 15th December 2010.

The 39-strong team will be competing against the remaining ten counties from the SADC region in the likes of Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Among the ladies, the fast improving 16 year old Kristy Muller, who ranked highest on the entry times in the 50 and 100m freestyle as well as the 200m individual medley, will also be in the water in the 50 and 100m butterfly races.

Mandeville Dolphins’ Kathryn Baumann will be representing SA in the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke as well as the 50, 200 and 400m freestyle events. A gold medalist in the 3km Gauteng Open Water Championships, Kathryn claimed a silver medal in the 200m Backstroke and 3 bronze medals for 50 and 100m Backstroke and 400m individual medley relay at the Telkom SA Level 3 Championships which took place in East London earlier this year.

On the men’s side, 19 year old Wesley Morris from Eastern Province Aquatics will be racing in the 50 and 100m freestyle, where he ranked highest in the entry times, as well as the 50, 100 and 200m backstroke, 200m freestyle and 200m individual medley.

Port Elizabeth’s Chris van de Sande, who recently won the 3km and 5km Cirrus Open Water competition, will be flying the South African flag high in the 100, 200 and 400m freestyle, 50, 100 and 200m backstroke as well as the 200m individual medley.

In wishing the SA swimming team the best of luck for the SCSA Zone 6 Games, Swimming SA CEO Shaun Adriaanse said: “The Zone 6 U20 Youth Games are an important stepping stone for our young rising talent to take their performances to new heights as they continue to improve their skills.”
