Fact: Trail running is the new black.

Just like mountain biking rode out of nowhere and knocked the wheels from under road cycling, trail running is the antidote to running on crowded, often hazardous roads, and a breath of fresh air for anyone who has been a runner for any length of time.

It’s booming - and it’s only going to get bigger.

TRAIL magazine strives to both reflect this and innovate new trends within trail running. We work hard, constantly and honestly, to bring you the best balance possible between training tips, event previews, race reviews, people interviews and equipment features.

TRAIL is published quarterly for 2012 and bi-monthly in 2013.The second issue builds on the launch issue with longer, detailed articles on an eclectic mix of topics including:

  • Running with Dogs (trail etiquette, best and worst breeds and common pooch injuries)
  • Growing and Eating the Sinful Dessert (a use for sweet potato leaves you never imagined)
  • Indoor trail? Yes, from a famous German stadium that hosted Iron Maiden, Prince and Black Sabbath
  • A preview of Knysna's famous (and always sold-out Salomon Featherbed Trail Run)
  • A 16-model Hydration Pack Guide to keep you hydrated while on the move, plus tips on getting the right type

TRAIL magazine's second issue is 100 pages thick and is packed with training tips, news and product reviews. Expert guest writers include desert and stage running queen Mimi Anderson, lifestyle coach Chantel Nienaber and trail racer Leo Rust, who sings the praises of Cape Town's Lion's Head.

Photographic contributors include Kelvin Trautman, Craig Kolesky and Jacques Marais.

TRAIL retails for R39.95 and is available in one and two-year subscriptions, with optional First Ascent product being offered for a limited time.

Comments from the team

"The first issue is looking great! It's 100 pages of trail running and only trail running. We're pleased to share it with you all," says publisher Deon Braun.

Editor Hugh Pines says: "Instead of your favourite sport being covered as a sideline, TRAIL brings everything you need and want to know under one title. We hope you're excited about it because we certainly are."

I'm a keen multisporter and always itching to get out there. It's a well deserved Sunday chill time and been recovering on the couch and saw Trail mag in the coffee table - wife is the reader in our household! I was moved by your story about Kevin Light and his legendary Troy. Their story is truly captivating and one that shall provide a light during my times of darkness when im out there alone on those late nights. Thinking about it now brings a sense of warm and feeling of greatness - Troy you legend!

Thank you for enriching my life forever....
