Ironman 70.3 SA popular as ever

It is three months until the end of the year and already things are hotting up on the 2012 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa front! Over 2,000 athletes have already entered for the ever popular event meaning that less than 1,000 entries remain.

The race has showed tremendous growth since its inception in 2008 and now, entering its fifth year, is set to reach the 3000 athlete mark. The event is well and truly on its way to becoming the biggest Ironman 70.3 event in the world in terms of athlete numbers and in a setting as breathtaking as East London with passionate supporters and a challenging course, there is every indication that the race will continue to grow.

Ironman 70.3 is associated with the famed Ironman brand yet has its own unique appeals. It is a more manageable distance for athletes who want to try their hand at something bigger than a standard distance event or want to tackle a triathlon for the first time. Many also use it as a precursor to the full Ironman but testament to the fact that the Ironman 70.3 brand has carved a niche for itself in the triathlon world is that to date there are 49 Ironman 70.3 races around the world.

Athletes who have completed the race in previous years know exactly what it is like. The nerves as you stand on the sand at swim start and the sheer elation of crossing the finish line to the words: “YOU ARE AN IRONMAN!” Such athletes often return the following year to beat their personal best times and relive that awesome feeling.
