Midlands Ultra triathlon signs title sponsors

B-Active Sports, the event organisers for the Midlands Ultra triathlon have announced that they have signed two joint title sponsors, K-Swiss and Future Life for this year's event. Both are already heavily involved with triathlons and other sporting events around South Africa, now including the prestigious Midlands Ultra on 6 March.

K-Swiss has been involved in Triathlons in South Africa for the past three years and have their own K-Swiss Triathlon Team. K-Swiss have a strong following in the Triathlon market with an extensive range of Triathlon training and racing shoes available. Future Life is South Africa's first low GI immune-boosting energy meal to contain clinically tested MODUCARE® and has 23 vitamins and minerals, 19 amino acids and Omega 3 & 6, is high in energy and protein and is a low GI food.

B-Active Sports is also pleased to announce that they have extended the competitors cut off times, giving the athletes 5hrs 10min to complete the 1.9km Swim course and 90km Bike leg of the Triathlon.  The Swim and Bike cut off time for the ULTRA event was previously 4hrs 40min, however after reviewing it on the half ironman distance course, it was decided to extend it. The Swim cut off will be 60min (1hr) and the Cycle cut off will be 4hrs 10min. This extended time period will give athletes on the bike course extra time to fix mechanical failures and problems. Entries have been pouring in for this prestigious event, making it the most sought after Triathlon in the country after Ironman SA and the Ironman 70.3 SA.

There are two events staged on race day, the Ultra Distance Triathlon, which consists of a 1.9km swim, a four lap 90km cycle and two lap 21km Run. The second event, will be a sprint distance race, consists of a 600m swim, 22.5km Cycle and a 5km Run. The ultra race routes will now consist of a one lap swim course, followed by four laps of 22.5km on the bike course and then a two lap 21km run route. The run route was made significantly easier in 2010, with only 20% of the run off road and 80% on-road. This unique run course, lends the event to a non urban environment with the course incorporating some of the beautiful natural heritage that surrounds Midmar Dam.

The Midlands Ultra will be a true demonstration of stamina, as both the Ultra event and the Sprint race will be non-drafting. Triathlon South Africa officials have said that they will have four officials out on the Cycle route checking that the rules are obeyed and that the course stays as safe as possible. At the finish line athletes will be spoilt with a massage tent for their weary legs as well as a food tent to feed their hunger.

Athletes wishing to compete in the 2011 event are encouraged to enter early as entries have been limited to 1, 000 competitors. 700 places have been kept for the Ultra event and 300 for the Sprint race. Teams and Individuals entering before 20 February will be treated to a fantastic goodie bag as well as an athlete’s finish tent and physio's. Pre-entries for both events close on 20 February, with registration taking place on Saturday 5 March at Midmar Dam between 10am and 3pm. Late entries will be accepted on Saturday at registration, which will be at the Midmar Dam slipway.
