Horners face top oppostion at Midlands Ultra
Past winning couple Claire and Kent Horner have secured their place in the 2011 Midlands Ultra Triathlon starting line-up, but will have tough opposition in the form of Gerhard De Bruin and KZN based Brad Storm and Glen Gore. Claire Horner won the 2009 and 2010 events, with her training partner and husband Kent winning the event in 2009. The 2010 men’s winner Brad Storm has also secured his place on the starting line and is looking to defend his title against Horner, Gore and De Bruin.
Pre-entries have closed for the 2011 Future Life K-Swiss Midlands Ultra Triathlon, which takes place at Midmar Dam on 6 March. The event has 600 national triathletes already entered for the race and who are now preparing themselves for the grueling event in the natal Midlands.
Defending winners Claire and Kent Horner, who are previously from KZN, are making the trip from Cape Town to defend their crowns. Claire claimed a well deserved 8th place at the 70.3 half ironman in January and has been steadily pushing her training to defend her 2011 Midlands Ultra title. Brad Storm who won last year’s race in an epic sprint down the finish straight against brother Anton, finished the 70.3 in January in a solid 10th place. Brad will be hungry to gain pole position in the swim and carry the lead all the way onto the run. Tuks athlete Gerhard De Bruin has been steadily improving his form over the past 12 months and took a well deserved 14th place in the Buffalo City 70.3.
B-Active Sports, the event organisers for the 2011 Midlands Ultra Triathlon are excited bring on their two new race sponsors, K-Swiss and Future Life for the 2011 event. Both sponsors are looking forward to being involved with the prestigious Midlands Ultra Triathlon at Midmar Dam. Entries have been pouring in over the past three weeks, making it the most sought after triathlon in KZN and one of SA’s leading triathlon races. This year’s event incorporates the South African Long Course Triathlon Championships with the SA triathlon team being selected for World Champs after the race. There will be two races on the day, the Ultra race or half Ironman distance triathlon, which consists of a 1.9km swim, a four lap 90km cycle and a two lap 21km Run. The second race, will be the sprint distance race, consisting of a 600m swim, 22.5km Cycle and a 5km Run.
Although entries have closed, athletes wishing to compete in a Team or individually can do a late at registration on Saturday at Midmar Dam, between 10am and 3pm. No Late entries will be taken on the day of the event.
