Ironman 70.3 SA loses top contender
The 2008 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa champion and current Spec-Savers Ironman South Africa champion, Raynard Tissink will not be plying his trade at the 2011 Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa in East London later this month.
The first Ironman 70.3 race of the year, the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa, unfortunately falls within Tissink’s off-season. Tissink, who notched up an impressive 5th place finish at the Ford Ironman World Championship in Kona, Hawaii last October, is currently involved with base training in an effort to be perfectly conditioned with aims of improving on his World Championship result later this year.
Tissink, who spent six months of 2010 training and racing in the United States, is fully focused on the Ironman World Championship and is using his off-season to maintain his drive and focus which certainly came to the fore in 2010.
The home crowd will be disappointed at the absence of Africa’s favourite Ironman son, but this could pave the way for last year’s 2nd place finisher at the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa, fellow South African James Cunnama. Cunnama has been in a rich vein of form and had a fantastic 2010 winning his first full distance Ironman race at Ironman Florida last year. Cunnama was also the number one ranked Ironman athlete for 2010 and will carry the mantle of local favourite in East London this year.
With Cunnama flying the South Africa flag high, the local crowd will have something to get excited about as this young athlete on a hot streak, takes it to the competition at the Spec-Savers Ironman 70.3 South Africa.
